- controlling music: The iPod will revolutionise the way we interact with our music software. Just the possibility of the iPad’s touchscreen to send midi and OSC data is worth the prize. And thanks to the versatility of a touchscreen, it could replace a dozen mididevices already out there; make you safe a lot of money. Concretely; I would use it to remote control Ableton live via M4L and to play instruments in Max/MSP. Wish list: velocity sensitivity and a sturdy iPad stand.
- artistic medium: A multitouch screen offers complete new ways for users to interact with art. Consuming and creating will finally come together. You could write interactive music, where you determine the mix or even better, the development of a song by your fingertips. Think of a painting, which you can change by moving your fingers over it. And all that, while sitting on your couch. That is, I’d like to write for the iPad. wish list: An easy way to get art through Apple’s app store.
- reading blogs and books: Already I prefer reading blogs and articles with my iPad. It’s so much more relaxed to take it everywhere you go instead of sitting in an unhealthy position at your desk. The iPad will bring that to next level. Who will want to hold a paper in your hands in the future?
- reading music: I hope that the iPad will end the days where I have to carry around with me a pile of scores. Already with a simple pdf-reader, I could scan in (or download) my music and than take it in my practising booth. Wiping a touch screen is much easier than turning pages. Wishlist: A score reader, with some extra features such as one click page turning and hand written annotations. What about an iScore shop?
There are some more ideas I have, like having a good map when hiking and tips on making a bonfire, when you forgot your matches. I think, the iPad will certainly change the way, how we’ll use the internet in the future, giving us back control and flexibility.
